The Devon Lee Pitts Story

DaVon Lee Pitts, 20, a graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School was attending Prairie State College when a drunken driver tragically killed him. He was parked on I-80 awaiting help with a flat tire.

On June 1st we celebrated my baby sons 21st birthday. We tried hard to make it a special occasion. Our memories went rampant as his “Love and Loyalty family” and I reminiscence on the lakefront. I was remembering each day of the nine months since he was taken away from us. I could vividly see him in my mind’s eye, riding one of those big beautiful horses that he rides in heaven. He rode out across Lake Michigan flashing a big beautiful smile and waved to us indicating that all was well with him.

DaVon’s loving big brother Dontae and father Don are remembering the good fun times they shared and how much they love and miss him. They say that their faith keeps them grounded in love.

Samantha Roberts (Sam), his fiancé and the love of Da Von’s life remembers him daily and wishes she could say, “Hey Von” and “Love you” one more time.

DaVon’s aura exuded his quest for adventure and curiosity. His social nature, warm smile and personality caused others to gravitate to him. Be warned for behind this sometimes serious face was a real prankster and self-proclaimed comedian. He has my vote for the most intense movie-viewer of all time choosing to stop a movie rather than hear or tolerate outside disturbances. His gregarious spirit was teamed with an accommodating disposition. His laughter continues to ring in my mind (Aunt Teresa Brown).

His cousin, Lillian Brown, says DaVon was more than her “Chocolate Buddy Friend”, more than a cousin, and more than a role model, he was like a brother. The one thing I admired the most was Von-Von was a cool likeable guy. He was the type of person you would want to be around even when your heart was about to break. He had charm, brains, and a loving personality that gave him spunk. But still today I softly whisper in the back o my mind that, “DaVon isn’t gone, but on a trip or something. But I swallow the truth and believe he is with our Heavenly Father, his maker, and his creator - God. That’s why we celebrate today and someday we will join him with our Master.

Our quest is to help get more drunken drivers off the roads, so that no other family will have to endure the nightmare that we are trying to wake-up from. With the help of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we will be victorious. Drunken drivers beware; remember Jehovah Sabboah prevails now and forever.
