2009 Sheila Forsner Award Presented to Joel Mains
A drunk driver killed Joel's stepdaughter, Caitlin Weese in 2003 at the age of seventeen, one week before she was to graduate from high school. Shortly after Caitlin's death her mother, Diane became involved with AAIM. Diane volunteered for AAIM by speaking at Victim Impact Panels targeted at DUI offenders. Diane also spoke to high school students throughout the area at their pre-prom prevention programs. Diane became an AAIM Advocate in 2005.
When Joel met Diane in 1995 she was a single mother with two daughters, Cassie and Caitlin. Joel and Diane were married four years later in June 1999. Shortly after Caitlin's death the Mains family started the "Walk 5K for Caitlin" and created a scholarship fund in Caitlin's memory. Tragically on August 21, 2006 Diane died from complications due to heart surgery. Those that knew Diane believe she died from a broken heart.
Since Diane's death, Joel has triumphed over tragedy and has continued the legacy of Diane and Caitlin through his work with AAIM. Joel serves on AAIM's Board of Directors. He presents a powerful message to students about the dangers of alcohol use and drinking and driving. He also speaks at Victim Impact Panels, press conferences and has volunteered countless hours to help in support of the entire AAIM family. Joel is now the new driving force behind "Walk 5K for Caitlin" and donates a portion of the proceeds to AAIM to help continue its life saving programs.
Congratulations Joel! You are a remarkable role model and an inspiration to many people.
