Highlights from 24 Years of Serving
in
Illinois |
- AAIM's
leadership has held important appointed advisory
positions on various governmental task forces
and commissions. AAIM was the organiztion
Jim Edgar chose to represent the grassroots
movement against drunk driving on his important,
successful DUI Task Force in 1983, 1984 and
1985. AAIM has also represented Illinois citizens
on the Governor's Drug Forum, The DuPage County
Drug Task Force, Secretary of State George
Ryan's Transition Team, the Secretay of State's
Advisory Council, the Kane County DUI Task
Force, the Lake County DUI Task Force, IDOT
(Illinois Department of Transportation) DUI
Advisory Council.
- AAIM
has initiated and/or supported virtually every
significant improvement to the drunk driving
laws in Illinois in the past 20 years. Our
volunteers and staff have testified numerous
times before both the State House and Senate.
- In
November 1992, we scored a legislative victory
when voters overwhelmingly ratified the Victim
Rights Amendment to our State Constitution.
The margin of victory was historically large,
and we are proud that it was AAIM that first
introduced the amendment and initiated formation
of the coalition of citizens groups, public
officials and government agencies that pushed
the amendment through. Now, for the first
time, victims of violent crimes have rights
in criminal court proceedings.
- Since
AAIM started its DRUNKBUSTERS
Program in 1990, over 2000 people have
claimed their $100 reward for successfully
reporting dangerous drunk and drugged drivers
to the police. With an average of one death
for every 50 drunk driving arrests, we estimate
that 40 lives were saved and another 800-1000
people were spared disabling injuries.
- AAIM
is the only group in the nation that raises
funds for victims who are financially devastated
due to an uninsured or underinsured drunk
driver. AAIM's annual
benefit has raised over $400,000 for direct
assistance to victims and their families.
- The
AAIMmobile is an autocycle that resembles
a small jet plane and is used in parades,
community events, and at schools. The purpose
of this eye-catching vehicles is to promote
public awareness about the dangers of drinking
and driving. - This program was discontinued
in 2004 due to lack of funding.
- Longer
than any other group in Illinois, AAIM has
been going to court with victims of drunk
driving - holding their hands and upholding
their right to justice from the criminal court
system.
- Our
work with victims has been very rewarding,
and has allowed AAIM to play a key role in
developing and conducting Victim
Impact Panels around Illinois. DUI offenders
have the opportunity to listen to DUI victims
to learn about the human side of the grim,
cold DUI statistics. It has been proven that
many offenders are moved to never repeat the
crime after participating in this valuable
program.
- Prevention
is key solving the drunk driving problem and
it begins in school. AAIM presents programs
to schools for pre-prom,
pre-Homecoming, and at safety fairs.
- Our
annual DUI survey
of police agencies throughout Illinois is
widely recognized in the media. This reflects
AAIM's efforts to make DUI enforcement a high
priority on the traffic safety agenda of chiefs
of police, county sheriffs and local government
officials throughout the state of Illinois.
By publicly recognizing the proven commitment
and achievement of the top departments and
individual officers in the fight against impaired
driving, AAIM rewards those currently doing
a good job and inspires others to increase
their efforts as well.
