ALCOHOL

  • One 12-ounce beer has as much alcohol as a shot of whiskey or a 5-ounce glass of wine

  • Nearly two-thirds of the students in Illinois reported use of alcohol over their lifetime.

  • Primary drug of choice for both whites and Hispanics in Illinois is alcohol. Whites accounted for 26,135 or 63% of alcohol admissions in Illinois treatment centers.

  • Among senior high school in Illinois, the use of alcohol had declined substantially, more among rural students.

  • Two out of three students cannot distinguish alcoholic beverages from non-alcoholic beverages.

  • Junior and senior high school students drink 1.1 billion cans of beer each year.

  • Seven million students are able to walk into stores and buy alcoholic beverages.

  • More than three million students drink alone; more than four million drink when they are upset and nearly three million drink because they are bored.

  • 66.6% of junior high students who drink alcohol carry a gun to school; 80.2% of high school students.

  • 52% of junior high students who drink alcohol take part in gang activities; 77.2% of high school students.

  • 51.6% of junior high students who drink alcohol think of suicide often, 73% of high school students.

  • 40.5% of junior high students who drink alcohol threaten to harm others, 69.5% of high school students

  • 47.2% of junior high students who drink alcohol get in trouble with the police, 75.3% of high school students.

  • There are approximately 1,030,000 Illinois adults with alcohol or other drug problems, 65% are in the workplace (based on average Illinois labor participation rate).
