It
is the fall of 2002 and a new school year
has begun. We have sent our second daughter,
Chrissy, off to college and our son, Mike,
is now a senior in high school, but nothing
seems right since our daughter, Candace was
violently taken from us. She was the oldest
of our three children and she was killed by
drunk drivers. It was December 26th, 1999
at about 9:15pm. Candace was home on Christmas
break from the University of Illinois of Chicago.
She had gone off to be with her friends, Brennan,
Adam and Dan. They had been best friends.
Since graduation from high school they got
caught up in the college life and Dan joined
the Air Force. It was Dan's birthday
and they just wanted to be together for a
while during the holidays. They decided to
go buy a video at a nearby Walgreen's.
The night was clear and crisp and they were
young and carefree and full of happiness to
be together as they often were in the past.
The streets were empty; being it was the night
after Christmas.
As
they crossed the street in a single file line,
two speeding cars came barreling down at them.
Brennan
said as the first car speed past Candace and
him, he felt the wind of the car pull him.
And Candace was gone. She was right next to
him and then she was gone. The car struck
her violently and she flew into the air and
landed on the other side of the street. Seconds
later, a second car came and ran over her,
again as she lay in the street, killing her.
The drivers of the cars were friends and they
were out drinking at a local bar together.
They didn't even hesitate to stop, Candace's
friends could only stand by her and watch
her die.
She
was a beautiful girl with long brown hair,
beautiful eyes and a model-like figure. She
was a loving daughter, good sister and the
best friend anyone could have. She would have
made great contributions to our society. Instead
we are left with these two poor excuses for
men. They are cowards. They knowingly got
behind the wheel of their cars drunk and took
an innocent life; a beautiful life. We are
awaiting trial for the driver of the second
car. His friend, the first driver, pleaded
guilty to the charge and is currently serving
10 years in the penitentiary.
AAIM
has helped us in so many ways. They always
go to court with me. They have also helped
us financially and spiritually. I will always
be grateful to AAIM.
I
know that Candace is with us always and someday
I will be with her again in God's heaven,
but for now we have only our memories.
